This hand crafted cedar strip canoe was built in 2008.

The cedar strips come from Canada and are milled with a cove and bead.

There are two ways a strip canoe or boat can be made, with or without staples. My personal preference is to build without staples.

Using Staples is the method of fixing the strips to the canoes form. It is a quicker method of construction. It unfortunately leaves the canoe with black pin holes after staples are removed. Its a preference to the builder or owner. Whatever method is chosen to be used it does not change the way a canoe glides through the water.

From a carpentry background I like to see less fixings.

Westsystems epoxy has been used with fibreglass cloth to add strength and to make the canoe water proof.

Epifanes UV marine varnish is used to give protection to epoxy and to make the canoe shine.

This particular canoe called a 'Bob Special' is of light weight and has a great carrying capacity. The design is favoured by fishermen due to its moderate rocker. For canoe plans have a look at bearmountainboats.

The length is 4.5 mt long

The beam at gunwales 860mm

The boat weight is approximately 22kg. The weight however will alter greatly depending of variety of woods used and the amount of epoxy resin usedin construction.
